Gujiya is a traditional Indian sweet pastry enjoyed during festivals like Holi and Diwali. Made with a crispy outer shell and a sweet, aromatic filling, it is a favorite among both young and old. Here’s how you can make it at home using Hathi Brand 100% Whole Wheat Chakki Atta.
- Prep time: 40 minutes
- Cook time: 20 minutes
- Total time: 60 minutes
- Servings: 20
Ingredients
- 2 cups Hathi Brand 100% Whole Wheat Chakki Atta
- 1 cup mawa (khoya)
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 1/2 cup grated dry coconut
- 1/4 cup chopped nuts – almonds, cashews, pistachios
- 1/4 cup raisins
- 1/2 tsp cardamom powder
- Water for kneading
- Ghee or oil for frying
Method
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the Hathi Brand 100% Whole Wheat Chakki Atta with water to make a smooth dough. Use a damp cloth to cover the dough and let it rest for 30 minutes.
- In a separate bowl, crumble the mawa and mix it with powdered sugar, grated dry coconut, chopped nuts, raisins, and cardamom powder to make the filling.
- Divide the dough into small lemon-sized balls. Roll out each ball into a small disc, about 3-4 inches in diameter.
- Place a tablespoon of the filling mixture in the center of each disc. Fold the disc over to form a half-moon shape and press the edges to seal. Try giving a decorative touch using a fork to crimp the edges.
- Heat ghee or oil in a deep frying pan over medium heat. Once hot, carefully add the Gujiyas in batches and fry until golden brown and crisp.
- Remove the Gujiyas from the pan.
- Allow them to cool completely before serving.
- Gujiyas can be stored in an airtight container for up to a week.
- Prepare fresh before Holi and serve them during the festival.
